Samuel Adams Releases New Utopias: the Beer That Doesn't Drink Like One
By Chip GriffinNovember 6, 2007
Imagine sipping an uncarbonated drink in a snifter. Not exactly the classic image of a beer, but that's exactly what Samuel Adams has done with the fourth release of its limited edition Utopias. Like some fine whiskies and brandies, the 2007 Utopias is a blend of liquids that have aged for up to 13 years in bourbon, sherry, and madeira casks. The end result is a beverage with 27 percent alcohol content, as compared to the more typical 5 percent for an average beer.
"A new generation of American beer lovers has inspired craft brewers to expand their horizons," said Jim Koch, brewer and founder of Samuel Adams. "Our drinkers are our inspiration, and we think this year's Samuel Adams Utopias will satisfy their thirst for an astonishing brew that not only tastes extraordinary, but also practically redefines what's possible in the beer universe."
Utopias will be available in a limited release of 12,000 bottles with an average retail price expected to be between $120 and $140. In addition, some restaurants, including Morton's steakhouse nationwide, are expected to carry this novel beer. Many retailers will also be providing a free snifter to consumers to help them better appreciate the drink.
