Spirit Tasting Law Vetoed in Wisconsin
By Chip GriffinOctober 30, 2007
Governor Jim Doyle of Wisconsin vetoed a provision in the new state budget that would have permitted retail outlets to offer consumers up to 3 half-ounce samples of spirits, bringing those drinks in line with the rules for beer instituted earlier this year. While the beer-and-brats and wine-and-cheese crowds will continue to enjoy samples as they make their buying decisions, those who favor whisky, vodka, and other spirits will have to purchase based on labels, not taste. Doyle told the Associated Press,"To me, it's absurd that you walk into a grocery store and start taking shots."
An industry trade organization, the Distilled Spirits Council, criticized the veto. "The Governor's decision to veto the distilled spirits sampling provision today is unfortunate for Wisconsin consumers and a blow to equal treatment in the marketplace. Beer and wine tastings are already permitted in the state and there is no reason to treat spirits products any differently. Alcohol is alcohol," a statement from the group said.
